What is an intake gasket on a vehicle?
What are the signs of a bad intake gasket? My friends mom has a 1998 Chevy Astro Van and it has coolant in the oil. Someone said it is either in need of a head gasket, or it has a bad intake gasket. They also said it was expensive and not worth the repair. Much like a head gasket. Women in need of some assistance please!
OK lets deal with the facts..The vehicle overheated, there is coolant in the oil - we don't know how long the vehicle was driven w/ coolant pumped thru the lubrication system or how many times it overheated or how hot the engine really got. Causes for coolant being in the oil - blown head gasket, intake gasket ( which can be checked easy enough by a compression test-which a good shop will charge you an hr or less in labor ) or cracked head. Effect of coolant going thru the lubrication system--if the vehicle was run for any length of time you need to be concerned about washing out the bearings( this means when coolant runs thru the small oil passages and washes away the lubricant , the 2 metal surfaces rub against each other which then becomes internal engine damage). To check this the tech willcheck for oil pressure and/or drop the oil pan and inspect for metal shavings. If there is metal shavings (AT ALL) or you have no oil pressure. then your into a new engine or good used 1 from a reputable wrecking yard (with a warranty - 6mths to a 1yr). Do not waste your time calling arouond for parts, thats what you pay the repair shop for (besides alot of shops will not warranty the job if you supply your own parts). Use your time to call the BBB and the Chamber of Commerce to find a trustworthy repair shop in your area. You should also look at the condition of the vehicle--how are the brakes, tires, transmission, has the maintance been kept up, is the interior in good shape. If everything else is good it might be worth proceeding with a large repair--then you know what you've got. If you go another car , make sure you have it checked buy a trust worthy shop...good luck
